I take photographs, that’s my ‘thing’. Not just photographs for me but also for other peoples’ businesses.
When I set up JMH PhotoStories, about a year ago now, I decided to create the website myself. Why did I decide I could do that when I had no experience? Because WordPress told me I could – I wanted to save some money, so I believed them. It was relatively easy to do and I was pleased with what I had done, until someone asked me why I had such a great logo but an average website. Was I happy with average? Of course not!
I rang a local web designer, Get Boosted, based here in Northampton. My website is now showing my business and photographs off as it should. Yes, it’s the biggest chunk of money I have spent but it’s the first impression, it has to be good.
A month earlier I had paid a professional to do my logo; Bhavini at B81 Designs, someone who knew what they were doing. That’s why it looks great. If I had paid someone who builds websites for a living to create mine, then perhaps, like my logo, my website would have been brilliant from the start and never average. It took me about 6 months to build my website and during that time, I had to turn down work – less work, less money!
How many of you are relating to what I am talking about?
In the world of digital marketing, we are constantly creating content for our websites, taking photographs, writing copy and posting, posting, posting on social media! Its time consuming and exhausting and takes us away from other areas of our businesses such as planning, networking and perhaps meeting our clients face to face.
So, what am I saying? Two things.
• Work out what your ‘thing’ is, what you are good at and enjoy them, put all your energies into THAT.
• Work out the time/costs of asking someone else to take on some of the things that don’t come naturally to you … just like I did or like my clients do with me. One of my clients love’s social media but does not have the time or skill to take photos and edit them, I take the bespoke photos to work with her brilliant words.
